NJ cosmetic eye surgeon reverses signs of aging
with innovative procedure

Dr. Jeffrey D. Schiller is an oculofacial plastic surgeon specializing in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids and face. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the prestigious American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Schiller utilizes state-of-the-art laser and endoscopic techniques to correct the signs of aging, and to repair eyelid and facial complex problems. He recently spoke with NJ Advance Media about his innovative lower eyelid and cheek lift procedure.

Q: What can patients who undergo this innovative procedure expect?
A: My procedure, which was published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the leading academic plastic surgery journal, is a rejuvenating operation extending the lower eyelid (blepharoplasty) to include the cheeks (or midface).

The aged, tired appearance of the lower eyelids is caused by changes in the eyelid itself as well as deflation and sagging of the cheeks. Those changes combine to cause a hollow beneath the bag in the lower eyelid, which results in the appearance of facial aging. Using a CO2 laser, the fat and puffy bags are removed from underneath the eyes, then the sagging upper cheek is lifted into the hollow beneath the eyelids. This results in a dramatic rejuvenation of the entire middle face.

Q: How can this procedure impact the patient’s life?

A: Lower eyelid and midface aging powerfully influences the emotional tone of the face, causing a sad, tired appearance.

Lower blepharoplasty with midface, or cheek lifting, makes a huge difference in the appearance of the face, which often takes 10 or even 15 years off the apparent age. This can be seen easily in the before-and-after photos of patients who have had this surgery.

Q: Who is the ideal candidate for this procedure?
A: Anyone with “bags” and hollows in their lower eyelids can benefit from this operation, which not only improves the eyelid appearance, but improves the overall balance and proportion of the face.

Q: How long is the recovery period and are results immediate?
A: Most of the recovery occurs between two and four weeks, although as with any facial surgery, the final result can take about six months.

Q: How does someone find the right surgeon for this procedure?
A: Patients must try to verify the credentials of their surgeon. They should be board-certified in a specialty that includes facial rejuvenation surgery. An experienced surgeon should have a portfolio of his or her own before-and-after photographs, including patients who have similar aging changes to your own, showing excellent results after surgery.

Q: How does someone interested in this innovative rejuvenation procedure find out more about it?
A: Patients interested in learning more about the procedure are welcome to contact our office. The cornerstone of the practice is to provide the best support and patient care possible. We gladly address all questions and concerns, and provide patients with step-by-step procedure details, reassuring their comfort throughout the entire process.
